Garment factory tragydy in Bangladesh Essays
Garment factory tragydy in Bangladesh Essays Garment factory tragydy in Bangladesh Essay Garment factory tragydy in Bangladesh Essay GARMENT FACTORY TRAGEDY IN BANGLADESH Bangladesh, the worlds second largest garment exporter, earns more than 10 per cent of its GDP from readymade garment factories. The country has about 4,500 factories, employing around 4million people. But worker in garment work at a very law price and in a very insecure condition taking the risk of life. Moreover this readymade garment sector has become a death trap for the workers in Bangladesh. Building collapse and fire are very frequent incident in this sector, especially in Saver and Ashulia. A statistic shows that at least 330 people have been killed in Garments Tragedy from 2000 to 2012. The accidents at Rana Plaza and Tazreen garment highlighted the appalling conditions of the garment factories. Rana Plaza Collaps has broke out all the record of the past taking a death toll of 1127 with injury of around 2500 people. It is considered to be the deadliest garment factory accident in history. Many families has become undone and many workers received a lifetime injury. Each new incident of fire and related damage adversely affects the reputation of the industry country abroad. Garment workers safety seems to be of nobodys concern in our country, neither the buyer nor the Government agencies in Bangladesh. The risk of garment factory accident increases significantly when construction laws are frequently ignored and safety regulations are not followed. Poor design, Poor construction and extra loads are the main causes of building collaps. : Lack of emergency exits and emergency announcement system, insufficient fire defense materials, insufficient water sources inside or out side of the factory are the main causes of fire accident in garment factory. Conspiracy because of political unrest of the country is also one of the reasons for garment factory tragedy. One of the major easons for frequent accident is that people responsible for garment factory accident are not brought to Justice. We should take lesion from these terrible massacres. We cannot allow this industry to be destroyed. Rather, we have to be united as a nation to strengthen the industry. The government, the leaders of the garments industry, the NGOs and the civil society all have to come forward in a united way to do this. BGMEA, BKMEA, and the labour organizations need to play their away in an effective way. We should not complete our duty by merely expressing our deep sympathy. We should be aware to prevent such incidents in future. In wake of Rana Plaza Tragedy ,government deployed authority for garment- factory inspection. This step should be continued and bear fruit. Construction laws have to be followed and every factory must assure safety regulation inside and outside the factory. The culprits must be brought to Justice. We should rehabitate and compansate those who lost their limbs and livelihood. On the other hand international buyer cannot avoid their responsibility . Finally we must keep our major source of foreign exchange free from political unrest and corruption. Garment factory tragydy in Bangladesh By nshohagb

Battle of Belleau Wood in World War I
Battle of Belleau Wood in World War I Part of the 1918 German Spring Offensives, the Battle of Belleau Wood took place between June 1-26 during World War I (1914 to 1918). Fought predominantly by US Marines, victory was achieved after twenty-six days of combat. The main German attack was repulsed on June 4 and US forces began offensive operations on June 6. The battle halted the German Aisne offensive and launched a counterattack in the area. Fighting in the forest was particularly fierce, with the Marines attacking the wood six times before it was finally secured. German Spring Offensives In early 1918, the German government, freed from fighting a two-front war by the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, chose to launch a massive offensive on the Western Front. This decision was largely motivated by a desire to end the war before the full strength of the United States could be brought into the conflict. Beginning on March 21, the Germans attacked the British Third and Fifth Armies with the goal of splitting the British and French and driving the former into the sea (Map). After driving the British back after making some initial gains, the advance stalled and was ultimately halted atà Villers-Bretonneux. As a result of the crisis caused by the German attack, Marshal Ferdinand Foch was appointed Supreme Commander of the Allied Armies and tasked with coordinating all operations in France. An assault to the north around Lys, dubbed Operation Georgette, met a similar fate in April. To aid these offensives a third attack, Operationà Blà ¼cherââ¬âYorck, was planned for late May in Aisne between Soissons and Rheims (Map). Aisne Offensive Beginning on May 27, German storm troopers broke through the French lines in Aisne. Striking in an area that lacked substantial defenses and reserves, the Germans forced the French Sixth Army into a full retreat. During the first three days of the offensive, the Germans captured 50,000 Allied soldiers and 800 guns. Moving quickly, the Germans advanced to the Marne River and were intent on pressing on to Paris. At the Marne, they were blocked by American troops at Chateau-Thierry and Belleau Wood. The Germans attempted to take Chateau-Thierry but were stopped by US Army forces centered around the 3rd Division on June 2. 2nd Division Arrives On June 1, the Major General Omar Bundys 2nd Division took up positions south of Belleau Wood near Lucy-le-Bocage with its line extending south opposite Vaux. A composite division, the 2nd consisted of Brigadier General Edward M. Lewis 3rd Infantry Brigade (9th 23rd Infantry Regiments) and Brigadier General James Harbords 4th Marine Brigade (5th 6th Marine Regiments). In addition to their infantry regiments, each brigade possessed a machine gun battalion. While Harbords Marines assumed a position near Belleau Wood, Lewis men held a line to the south below the Paris-Metz Road. As the Marines dug in, a French officer suggested that they withdrawal. To this Captain Lloyd Williams of the 5th Marines famously replied, Retreat? Hell, we just got here. Two days later elements of the German 347th Division from Army Group Crown Prince occupied the forest. With their attack at Chateau-Thierry stalling, the Germans launched a major assault on June 4. Supported by machine guns and artillery, the Marines were able to hold, effectively ending the German offensive in Aisne. Marines Move Forward The following day, the commander of the French XXI Corps ordered Harbords 4th Marine Brigade to retake Belleau Wood. On the morning of June 6, the Marines advanced, capturing Hill 142 to the west of the wood with support from the French 167th Division (Map). Twelve hours later, they frontally assaulted the forest itself. To do so, the Marines had to cross a wheat field under heavy German machine gun fire. With his men pinned down, Gunnery Sergeant Dan Daly called Come on ya sons-of-bitches, ya want to live forever? and got them on the move again. When night fell, only a small section of forest had been captured. In addition to Hill 142 and the assault on the woods, the 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines attacked into Bouresches to the east. After taking most of the village, the Marines were forced to dig in against German counterattacks. All reinforcements trying to reach Bouresches had to cross a large open area and were subjected to heavy German fire. When night fell, the Marines had suffered 1,087 casualties making it the bloodiest day in the Corps history to date. Clearing the Forest On June 11, following a heavy artillery bombardment, the Marines pressed hard into Belleau Wood, capturing the southern two-thirds. Two days later, the Germans assaulted Bouresches after a massive gas attack and almost retook the village. With the Marines stretched thin, the 23rd Infantry extended its line and took over the defense of Bouresches. On the 16th, citing exhaustion, Harbord requested that some of the Marines be relieved. His request was granted and three battalions of the 7th Infantry (3rd Division) moved into the forest. After five days of fruitless fighting, the Marines retook their position in the line. On June 23, the Marines launched a major attack into the forest but were unable to gain ground. Suffering staggering losses, they required over two hundred ambulances to carry the wounded. Two days later, Belleau Wood was subjected to a fourteen-hour bombardment by French artillery. Attacking in the wake of the artillery, US forces were finally able to completely clear the forest (Map). On June 26, after defeating some early morning German counterattacks, Major Maurice Shearer was finally able to send the signal, Woods now entirely -US Marine Corps. Aftermath In the fighting around Belleau Wood, American forces suffered 1,811 killed and 7,966 wounded and missing. German casualties are unknown though 1,600 were captured. The Battle of Belleau Wood and the Battle of Chateau-Thierry showed the United States allies that it was fully committed fighting the war and was willing to do whatever was required to achieve victory. The commander of the American Expeditionary Forces, General John J. Pershing,à commented after the battle that The deadliest weapon in the world is a United States Marine and his rifle.à In recognition of their tenacious fighting and victory, the French awarded citations to those units that participated in the battle and renamed Belleau Wood Bois de la Brigade Marine.à Belleau Wood also showed the Marine Corps flare for publicity. While the fighting was still going on, the Marines routinely circumvented the American Expeditionary Forces publicity offices to have their story told, while those of Army units engaged were ignored. Following the Battle of Belleau Wood, Marines began being referred to as Devil Dogs. While many believed that this term was coined by the Germans, its actual origins are unclear. It is known that the Germans highly respected the Marines fighting ability and classified them as elite storm troopers.

Critically assess the relative competitiveness and socio-economic Essay - 1
Critically assess the relative competitiveness and socio-economic outcomes of manufacturing in China - Essay Example This manuscript mulls over these aspects while considering the socio-economic outcomes of manufacturing in China. Among the key factors that contribute significantly to Chinaââ¬â¢s relative competitiveness are its favorable investment opportunities. Chinaââ¬â¢s favorable macroeconomics has significant positive impacts on its competitiveness (Dunning & Gugler 2008, 170). For instance, foreign manufacturers have the capability to negotiate with the Chinese government over tax benefits. As such, organizations may have more tax benefits, owing to their adherence to specific government norms. Various manufacturing firms have received priority in this aspect, thereby creating a suitable environment for manufacturers. Besides, the promotion of reinvestments in China significantly boosts its competitiveness. Firms within China may recover their taxes up to over 40 percent, owing to their reinvestment for next five years. The reinvestment of numerous foreign firms within China has significantly promoted its expansion, thereby critically boosting its competitiveness. Increased inexpensive and skilled labor also boosts Chinaââ¬â¢s competitiveness. Survey shows that China has cheap literate labor as compared to other competing Asian nations such as India, thus making it a choice destination for foreign investors in manufacturing (Liang et al. 2014 1106). Besides, technological advancements have significantly boosted Chinaââ¬â¢s relative competitiveness. In the recent past, China has significantly improved its infrastructure, thereby providing a suitable manufacturing environment for foreign investors. The nation boasts of sophisticated road and water transport networks, with highly efficient communication networks. Many significantly reduce foreign investment, owing to diverse stringent regulations that tend to favor local firms. However, this concept does not apply in China, where it provides flexible

Literacy Skills and Practices Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Literacy Skills and Practices - Essay Example This paper focuses on my literary practices, how they came by and the technological and social perspectives. When I was around three and years old, my parents used to read to me. This way I was able to memorize some of the stories they read to me. Computers and television played a significant role in teaching me how to read and write through educational programs. This helped to shape me as a writer and lay a firm literacy foundation. I got my first computer when I was in fifth grade. Initially, I used it to play music and online games but later I used it to communicate via email and social media. Word processors came in handy when designing text documents. Since then, the computer has been part and passel of my reading and writing process. The new technologies have transformed my literacy practices, both intentionally and unintentionally. They have built my foundational literacy skills such as phonics, comprehension, spelling, vocabulary, writing, and phonemic awareness. Initially, t he definition of literacy was based in the print world, which was a world of print media, a two-dimensional world of images and print. This definition does not accommodate the new ways of literacy practices like information search across multiple media, the participating visual conferences and virtual environments, emails, creating personal blogs, wikis or websites. As a reader, I am not confined to comprehending and decoding the print word. I am able to author texts, critique and respond to texts, read and understand information from numerous perspectives. No set of rules or regulations are set to guide my online participation and monitor what I pay attention to. As a reader, I am expected to understand complex designs which include pop-ups, images, hyperlinks, and icons. My teachers have guided and modelled me literally, enabling me to critically synthesize and analyze ideas; interpret messages; identify audience and purpose and be involved in reflective activities. Technology has provided many opportunities for us as learners to collaborate with one another; hence literacy is not only about writing but also a combination of ideas with other people. As a student, I have been able to link with other students across the globe. This includes various people from different cultural backgrounds and nationalities. This activity has always been preceded by thorough research on how different cultures respond and react to different information. As students, we have literally engaged in practices away from our classrooms. Some students run and own blogs and, therefore, communicate regularly with other peers. By reading different educative blogs and articles, I have managed to harness vast knowledge on a wide variety of issues. Currently, learners are called upon as confident and discerning users of search engines and websites, social networking participants, complex information maze scrutinizers, critical and strategic explorers.

Sustainable Brand luxury Essay Example for Free
Sustainable Brand luxury Essay Introduction What is striking is the similarity between the two. I can say that sustainability and luxury are similar to bedfellows. Sadly, this would be somewhat naive. Luxury is constantly on move as said by many economists (Kapferer 2008, p. 96). Sustainable fashion with its luxury indicates living harmoniously with mother earth; it is employing trained artisum in safe and humane working conditions. Luxury products are often considered to have larger environmental footprints than their peers. There is an area where sustainability now encourages the luxury dream itself. (Exploria Art of Travel) Nature that is unspoiled is rare today, a chain of hotels emerged where the dream is sustainability like Explora in chille with resorts in Atacama and other places, and these are fully positive energy buildings, with no litter. An organic bacterium is used to destroy everything and food is produced through organic farming by native farmers and so on. Sustainability luxury now Luxury brands are now-a-days interested to turn over a new leaf. Many firms are repositioning to compete with others in their field through environmental and social responsibility as a point of differentiation when competing for the share of consumer wallet which is very tight in economic downturn. (Lakshmi Prasanna 2013, pers. Comm. , 18 Feb. ), Luxury has now passed into masses rather than a cream layer. Sustainability luxury have been Luxury brands have been bought by only those who had money, taste and power. Some products play a role of status symbols and simply they are perceived by public. There is no necessary that these are better than their less expensive products, are bought with main reason of displaying wealth. (Inconspicuous consumption, 2008) These types of products are objects of socio-economic phenomenon called conspicuous consumption. Sustainability luxury can be or ought to be Luxury brands usually set their own standards. Very high gross margins are achieved by Luxury brands and they relay strongly on their reputation, because reputation gives strength to the brand (Tabatoni et al, 2010). People are purchasing luxury goods and are promoting new era of market innovation around sustainability. Every category of good available in the market today includes similar products whose luxury is marked by better quality components and materials. Focus The focus of this article is to analyze relationship of luxury and sustainability. Itââ¬â¢s important to see how todayââ¬â¢s young consumers, so conscious of green values do, balance their continual need for ever-newer fashion with their presumed commitment to environmental sustainability The image1 above you can see European business review 2013. Market demand Luxury brand is very visible sector; public attention is wholly linked to its high profile customers, VIPââ¬â¢s and celebrities. For many years the luxury goods market has been on an upward climb. The industry had a setback in 1997 called the Asian Financial Crisis, In 2000 the industry has performed well, the luxury products market in the world which includes drinks, fashion, cosmetics, fragrances, watches, jewelry, luggage, handbags ââ¬â was worth close to $170 billion and grew 7. 9 percent. Only (-0. 9 percent) decline was suffered by this sector, which was the lowest (Okonkwo, 2007 pg.145). (Epsten roy 2003) Today sustainability is regarded as virtually important business perceptive by multiple people such as investors, stake holders, customers and policy makers. Horizons of sustainability: Raising awareness In regard with sustainability the companyââ¬â¢s are taking much regard in making changes that support the term sustainability, the more the changes are made they will tend to become part of the companyââ¬â¢s identity and mix up into their overall strategy, leading not only to greater sustainability but also greater trust from consumerââ¬â¢s. By remaking the fundamental values of luxury, sustainability can help to clearly check its difference versus more common premium brands. At a time when sustainability is still not well understood or accepted by many people, the influence exerted by luxury brands could play a key role in raising both awareness and also helping to drive behavioral change in consumers. First input must come, not from consumers, but from pioneering brands (Leslie). Brands that will- Encourage reparability and long life of product Promote principle of buy less and pay more. Dematerialize and reinvent luxury experience. Promote respect for appropriate compensation of craftsmanship. Serve as sustainable trend setter. In order to create demand brands should make their image by raising awareness among consumers. In terms of awareness rising, consumer education and behavior change campaigns, major role can be played by celebrities but there also range of other possibilities including traditional and social media which can be interesting, fun and relevant to the audience of all groups. Another event of the luxury market is Luxury Shopping Avenues. Certain thoroughfares like Melbournes Collins Street, Singapores Orchard Road, Amsterdams P. C. Hooftstraat Athens, Chicagos Magnificent Mile, Paris Champs-Elysees, Avenue Montaigne (Wikipedia) area are some places where most luxury brands tend to be concentrated. These are managed by large companies which concentrate luxury goods stores. Positive behavior of buyer: schemes For retailers, the challenge is always to attract customers to their spot as there are many alternatives for customers and help them to understand the benefit in making sustainable choice. Some use incentive schemes which help to keep customers loyal by rewarding them with points that can be spent on virtual markets/ websites. And customer loyalty and willing to pay price premium is particularly important for new ethical brands that are looking to grow. Itââ¬â¢s said retaining old customer is better than finding new customers as finding one costs double then retaining the old one. Barriers Luxury is based on object rarity or can be also said as scarcity. . (J. N.Sheth et al, 2010) High prices limit demand for these products and are the best way to protect future of these resources. Sustainable luxury goods- Do not directly focus on customers. Do not recognize emerging threat from rising global over-consumption. The approach is not holistic. Conclusion Sustainable luxury goods have long standing concern for quality and craft. Blendell and Kleanthous (2007) The choice of consumer to pursue the luxury is linked to the brandââ¬â¢s stance on important social issues, such as saving the planet. All that can be said is ââ¬Å"for all we know, we might not get tomorrow to save earth. â⬠There are some brands showing how luxury fashion can successfully achieve and market sustainability and ethics. As a consumer myself, I would want to show that I not only enjoy good quality of the good but that I also care for environment and I hope most of consumers think alike. An artwork is foremost a reflection and expression
It has been essentially argued since time immemorial of how an artwork is foremost a reflection and expression of the deeper emotions and values of an artist, which may sometimes be unfortunately suppressed in the artistââ¬â¢s life or unintentionally implied in the artwork. For that matter, any artwork is perhaps considered an artistââ¬â¢s personal drama set in a creative manner of expression. Sophie Treadwellââ¬â¢s play, Machinal, and T.S. Eliotââ¬â¢s poem, The Love Song of J. Alfredà Prufrock, are be fitting examples of modern human drama relatively framed in a dark, lonesome, and tragic milieu of love, death, age, solitude, and despair in the twentieth century. In Eliotââ¬â¢s poem, the narrator or speaker in his poem is a contemporary man who feels secluded brought by the fear of aging, and who is indecisive to act upon his crisis on love for a woman. The speaker Prufrock is rather an epitome of despair, frustration, and helplessness of the modern man toward a personal crisis. Prufrock positions himself as a symbol of disillusionment and dismay for failing to overcome his human weaknesses. What makes the poem or the speaker tragic is that his insecurity on a lot of things is holding his happiness in life and love. He remains to be brooding, dark, lonesome and awaits death in no time. Eliot has always been a difficult read, and this quality of writing has put him in the level of other literary masters. For a non-Eliot reader, the poem may initially seem confusing to understand. However, the speaker Prufrock has been endowed by Eliot the style of repeating particular phrases and going back to his main sentiment while the poem develops into a whole new set of ideas. This style is reassuring the reader that he can understand the deeper emotions of the speaker as he slowly reads through it. On one hand, this repetition may also show the speakerââ¬â¢s inability to communicate well with the society, and he needs to repeat words such as vision and revision to be clearly understood. Eliot possesses an ironic manner of writing that is very well implied on how Prufrock talks about his love for a woman but is coward enough to open up his feelings and of how he even contradictorily speaks of time as he would sense the urgency to capture life and love in his hands before old age and death take him away, but would also set it aside and reveal that there is still time to catch up on things. The first two similar characteristics or qualities of Treadwellââ¬â¢s play with Eliotââ¬â¢s poem are the twentieth century setting and powerful themes of death and despair, even though the formerââ¬â¢s work is based on a sensational real murder case and the latter is more of a personal struggle brought about by aging. Machinal is also similar with Prufrockââ¬â¢s written image of pessimism and depression for things that they are incapable of having, but both end in different resolutions. Machinalââ¬â¢s main character, Helen, is unhappily married to a vicious man and yet happily having an extra-marital affair with a younger man. But, Helen being incapable of loving the younger man in the most proper ways as dictated by societyââ¬â¢s conventions, murders her husband and releases herself from the wretched married life. In the case of Prufrock, he remains attached to his fears of opening up to his love and to the society. Machinal is as powerful and intense as Prufrock in its presentation of despair over love. Machinal is desperately consumed with two kinds of love as previously stated. What makes Helen a tragic hero like Prufrock is their disparate heroism takes them not into the world of admiration, but into a world of utmost dismay and desperation ââ¬â theirs is a tragic presentation of surrender to an inescapable human obstacle of frustrating emotions. Treadwell is capable of repetitive rhythm like a strange poem ââ¬â a quite tricky concept like Eliot ââ¬â yet incorporated the theatrical lingo of any expressionistic writing during the twentieth century. To say expressionistic is to only define the attributes of human emotions, not necessarily placing it into an approach of realism. But, moreover, Machinal is an engaging, dark display of human wickedness doomed like Prufrockââ¬â¢s love song. Works Cited Treadwell, Sophie. Machinal (Royal National Theatre).
